“Pass a Good Time” at BUKU

BUKU 2019 Art Backdrop

A short drive from the bustle of Bourbon Street, past the smell of Café Du Monde beignets and over south Canal Street, you can find a festival for music, art and traditional Louisiana cuisine known as BUKU Music + Art Project. The festival brings in major musical talents from various genres like hip-hop, indie, and electronic, but the most impressive aspect of BUKU is the amount and variety of art. BUKU encompasses the art-rich history of the Big Easy by showcasing multiple artists and art forms like roving musical troupes, acrobats, and dancers, while also creating fun backdrops like graffitied walls, revolving projection mapped spectacles, and Mardi Gras floats. Whether walking to another set or exploring the venue, you are always surrounded by art.

BUKU 2019 Shipping Crate Art
The BUKU shipping crate art installation was a popular backdrop

A crowd favorite was New Thousand with Adrian Jusdanis, who would wow passersby with an animated performance on his electric violin accompanied by Nick Haven, performing on five gallon buckets, used as drums. You couldn’t help but be drawn into the crowd that encircled Adrian and watch with eager eyes as he fervently plucked notes with his teeth while dancing around. The roving musical troupes added an essence of surprise to the BUKU experience by turning up unannounced with a group of dancing festival goers in tow as they moved to various stages as if the troupe was the Festival Pied Pipers.

Aside from the pop-up musical acts, BUKU hosted some major musical talent that undoubtedly helped them expand the venue and boast record numbers for their eighth year. Established artists like Lana Del Ray, RL Grime, A$AP Rocky, and Griz headlined the festival; all the musical acts big and small delivered. The Slander B2B NGHTMRE performance Friday night really set the bar for the weekend as the trio played a bass heavy set that got the whole crowd head-banging and sporting dirty bass faces. Yaeji performed her signature sound, hip hop house with mellow Korean and English lyrics, to a packed Float Den stage Saturday evening. Oliver Tree also graced the Float Den and despite starting 45 minutes later than scheduled, was greeted by cheering fans as he rode in on his Razor scooter while emulating the 80’s by sporting a brightly colored puffy track suit.

BUKU 2019 Oliver Tree

Oliver Tree wasn’t the only BUKU attendee dressed to impress. The entire festival was flooded with outlandish and expressive fashions that one could only find in New Orleans. Everything from rhinestone cowboy hats to Carnival style bras and feather headdresses were seen cutting through the crowd or standing in line for water. You could also visit one of the many “style booths” and get glittered, colorful hair extensions, or body painted.

BUKU also incorporated the Big Easy’s foodie scene into the festival by allowing attendees the option to try traditional Louisiana food like shrimp po’boys, boudin Cajun sausage, and spicy gumbo. Those with VIP wristbands were invited to the Crawfish Boil Saturday afternoon where they could enjoy fresh crawfish paired with all the fixins like corn on the cob, potatoes, and Cajun spiced onions. Having access to these traditional Louisiana foods really brought the whole BUKU experience together.

The eclectic blend of music, art, fashion and food should put BUKU on your list as a must see festival. The culture of New Orleans flows through the venue and brings an exciting edge to the music and arts festival. As the locals would say, “Pass a good time” and come check out BUKU!

Goldrush 2018 Recap

Goldrush 2018 Girls

Goldrush returned for its second year to the Rawhide Western Town and Event Center this past September 29-30, 2018. Did this year’s line up live up to last year’s standards for you? This year, some rainy weather augmented the stage production as lights reflected off the rain. Relentless Beats also made improvements to the layout of the festival, making crowds flow smoother from one stage to the next.

Goldrush 2018 Town

The Hideout stage and a rock climbing wall sit near the entrance to Goldrush, which leads into the main town area. This area like last year was breathtaking and incredible to see everyone all dressed up in their western attire. The town is breathtaking as it’s decked out with old western attire, including the crowd. The town featured various vendor booths and amenities, as well as a hangout zone with a giant chessboard, games, and plenty of seating for taking a break.

Next, the Pioneer Peak stage featured artists like Blossom, SoDown, Tookie, Virtual Riot, SayMyName, Black Tiger Sex Machine, TroyBoi, Rich The Kid, and Kevin Gates. The Pioneer Peak stage was quite a spectacle on Saturday, chock-full of eye-catching lasers. Unfortunately, the stage production was dialed back a bit due to the rainy weather. However, this did not hinder the artists from throwing down some great performances. Beyond the Pioneer Peak stage featured a spot for live artists to display their talents.

Beyond Pioneer Peak featured the Wagon Wheel and Golden Gorge stages. Night one featured Codeko, Said The Sky, Chris Lake, Slushii, Vince Stables, Deorro, and Deadmau5 at Golden Gorge, while the second night featured Loud Luxury, Ekali, Slander, Louis The Child, Illenium, with Steve Aoki closing out the festivities with his typical showmanship and shenanigans.

What do you think was it better than last year? Comment on our Instagram page what you think @dancebreakmusic. If you got a cold from staying with us while it was pouring, hope you feel better and stay hydrated!

Goldrush 2017 Stage Flames

A view from Goldrush 2017

We’ve put together information below on some of the crowd favorites that will be at Goldrush 2018.

Slushii – Genre: Trap – Julian Scanlan, aka Slushii, is a LA based EDM producer, vocalist, and DJ. After finding his sound in his remix of Zedd and Selena Gomez’s “I Want You To Know,” which was dedicated to his more light-hearted and future bass sound, this was his first official project under the stage name “Slushii.” That was back in 2013, since then Slushii signed to Red Light Management in February 2016 and soon after released his first single “Emptiness.” In 2017 he continued to create mesmerizing upbeat tracks, including collaborations with future bass DJ, Marshmello. Slushii came out with his debut studio album titled Out Of Light in August 2017. The album has 13 songs, including previously recorded songs “Dear Me,” “My Senses,” “Step By Step,” and “I Still Recall.” Each song consists of his own “cartoonish and pitched-up” vocals.

Slander – Genre: Trap – This duo met at their fraternity in UC Irvine and later graduated from Icon Collective together. They also became close friends with Tyler (NGHTMRE) at Icon Collective. Theirstage name, Slander, comes from their real names: “S(cott) Land” and “Ander(sen)”. In 2014 their remix of Showtek’s song “We Like To Party” with NGHTMRE had well over 12 million plays on YouTube and was what most credit as Slander’s rise to popularity. Since then there’s been an overwhelming number of collaborations with NGHTMRE, WAVZ, SNAILS, Yookie, Jinzo and many others. This duo brings the fire to the stage and you can clearly see them vibing off of each other, it’s electric! Head bangers get ready!

Troyboi ‘T-R-O-Y-B-O-I’ – Genre: Trap – One of South East London’s most closely guarded secrets, this multi-talented musician specialises in extraordinarily unique, versatile, and highly musical tracks that fuse various textures from multiple genres and brands it as ‘My Style.’ TroyBoi is without a doubt one of the top up-and-coming producers in the game right now and it’s quite clear from his composition that his influences are vast indeed. He has already produced tracks with some very high profile artists and his collaboration with Flosstradamus ‘Soundclash’ is arguably one of the biggest anthems in the scene today. His style is undeniably his own, infectious to the ears and beyond stimulating to the mind. He is also one half of the Producer/DJ duo SoundSnobz with one of his best friends, icekream. Together they craft the most creative and daring audio paintings you’ll ever listen to. Buckle up and get ready to be taken into the world of TroyBoi because once you are in, you will NEVER want to get out.

SAYMYNAME – Genre: Hard Trap – Better known as Dayvid Lundie-Sherman: SAYMYNAME. As a result of years of hard work, working 35 hour weeks at Guitar Center, and his dedication to the studio in his spare time, he was signed by AM ONLY. After trying to figure out his sound with trap and hardstyle, his re-birth came about as he discovered #HARDTRAP. SAYMYNAME has been on the forefront as a pioneer of this sound movement. Numerous blogs and fans have labeled him as The Godfather of HARDTRAP. Keep an eye out for this young exciting act with his mesmerizing stage presence, ridiculous energy that has created a whole new movement, and enthusiasm that successfully converts brand new fans at every show.

Can’t wait to see who will be ending the festivities this year! What do you think? Illenium or Steve Aoki? Let us know on Instagram @dancebreakmusic!

Alberto Puts a Damper on Sunset Music Festival

SMF 2018 Day 1 Marshmello

Just over a week before the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center began tracking an area of low pressure in the western Caribbean Sea, which eventually formed into the first cyclone of the season: Subtropical Storm Alberto. As the week progressed, Alberto tracked up the Gulf of Mexico, making a beeline from the Yucatán Peninsula to the Florida panhandle. Leading up to Sunset Music Festival, it looked like the Tampa Bay area would miss the brunt of the storm. On the first day of Sunset Music Festival, the weather mostly held off. It was cloudy all day, with some occasional drizzle, which gave attendees a reprieve from the typical Florida heat. For the most part, the weather was gentle and Day 1 went off without a hitch.

Aside from the weather, SMF rolled out some significant changes for 2018. In previous years, SMF hosted a wide variety of artists, hosting themed stages specifically for trance, house, bass, and mainstream music. However, SMF seems to have pivoted this year, favoring a very bass-heavy lineup that featured artists like Rezz, NGHTMRE, Slander, Excision, Illenium, JOYRYDE, Zomboy, Herobust, Borgore, and many other heavy-hitters. There was also the fan favorite, marshmello, as well as a mix of house artists like Destructo, Anna Lunoe, Wax Motif, and others. While there was a bit of variety of music, the focus on bass artists was undoubtedly obvious.

Additionally, in previous years, SMF had three stages: Sunset Stage, Eclipse Stage, and Horizon Stage.  In 2018, they added two new stages: Corona Electric Beach, a tropical-themed stage sponsored by Corona, and the Cool Down, Get Down stage, located inside of the Cool Down Tent. While the Cool Down Tent was present in previous years, this was the first year that SMF hosted a full lineup of artists inside the tent. The two additional stages were an odd choice, given that there seemed to be less variety in music this year, and it appeared that the production from the three original stages had been scaled back to allow for two more stages.

SMF 2018 Day 1

Gray skies do little to slow the party down. Photo by Rukes.

Although Alberto brought cooler temperatures and cloudy skies on Day 1, Day 2 was ultimately canceled, before doors opened, by the Tampa Sports Authority, in conjunction with the Tampa Police Department and Tampa Fire Rescue, due to a Tropical Storm Warning that was in effect until 5PM that day. Attendees were naturally frustrated, but the frustration was exacerbated by the fact that Sunday turned out to be a pleasant day with mostly blue skies. The silver lining is that artists and promoters across the Tampa Bay Area went into overdrive, quickly finding venues across the Bay Area to throw alternate parties. The Ritz hosted most of the Day 2 mainstage artists, including Excision, Illenium, Alan Walker, Ekali, 3LAU, Bonnie x Clyde, Zaxx and Warez. Bonnie x Clyde made an epic tour around Tampa Bay, hitting multiple venues and house parties. In addition to the parties, Sunset Events released their Refund Policy, which allows for 50% refunds on two-day tickets and 100% refunds on Sunday-only tickets.

Sunset Music Festival 2018 will undoubtedly be a memorable year, for better or worse. Although the weather put a damper on the festivities, organizers across the Bay Area pulled together to put on some alternate shows at the last minute. Aside from the weather issues, however, it seemed like Sunset Events made some questionable decisions with spreading the stage production thin and cutting back on music variety. They certainly have their work cut out for them in 2019, when they will need to breathe new life into the festival and ensure they have attendee confidence in the ability to make 2019 a more memorable year.

The lineup is bass-heavy this year and features headliners Marshmello, The Chainsmokers, and Excision, with artists like Anna Lunoe, NGHTMRE, San Holo, Herobust, JOYRYDE, Slander, Space Jesus, and more rounding out remaining spots. Weekend tickets are currently on sale with GA selling for $164.95 (plus taxes and fees) and VIP selling for $259.95 (plus taxes and fees).

For more information, read up on the official press release:

Sunset Music Festival has become the staple in its hometown of Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium. What started as a single day event grew to a two-day fest by its third year and now Disco Donnie Presents and Sunset Events, purveyors of the festival in the Sunshine-State, are announcing an unprecedented lineup-up for their 7th consecutive year.

Sunset Music Festival returns under the Floridan sun for an electric Memorial Day Weekend on May 26 & May 27. Pushing boundaries, this years’ line-up represents the many facets of the festival and its inclusive and innovative spirit, adding R&B and Hip-Hop talent to the best of the best in dance music.

The Chainsmokers, Marshmello, and Excision are announced to headline the two day fest and will be joined by “Goresteps” own Borgore, Destructo, Anna Lunoe, Bonnie x Clyde, Canadian trap queen DJ Cray, Australia’s GG Magree, K?D, Baltimore’s GypZ and Elephante + many more.

Disco Donnie comments, “This year’s SMF lineup includes a lot of firsts to make the lineup our biggest yet — three top tier headliners, new genres like hip hop, a focus on female artists, back to back sets, stage takeovers by All My Friends and Brownies & Lemonade, plus some new surprises in store in coming weeks.”

John Santoro of Sunset Events adds, “I feel that we really dialed in the operations last year and can’t wait to show all the added toys we put into the festival this year for our family to enjoy. I hope everybody’s ready for an unbelievable festival. From the start in 2006 to now is simply amazing how our fans love for this festival made it grow to what we are all going to experience this memorial weekend. Can’t wait for memorial weekend and for all the memories to be made.”

Leading up to the festival, SMF released a series of comedic teaser trailers, featuring Levi & Flynn, a tale of two aspiring musicians, living in a RV in Tampa, who were mistakenly convinced they were booked to headline this year’s event, since the duo shared the same name as one of the 2018 artists, Hippie Sabotage. The videos were the work of Agata Alexander, Jason Kaye, Rob Michaelson, creators of the Hard Music Festival trailers.

This year will see the debut of two exclusive stage takeovers, where electro meets hip hop featuring Destructo & Yo Gotti at the All My Friends stage, plus A-Trak and YehMe2 will headline the Brownies & Lemonade stage. The two recently declared “We’re open for festival season” and they’ll be bringing their impressive energy to the party.

Protip: get some rhinestones to bedazzle your neck brace or bring sharpies so all of your new friends can sign your brace, and remember, wear it with pride!

Aside from Excision and his neck breaking beats, festival goers will be able to bask in 500,000 watts of downright dirty bass while enjoying the musical stylings of Cookie Monsta, Kill the Noise, Slander, Snails and many more bass extraordinaires. Dubstep has gone through a major revival this year and we are beginning to see more festivals catering to the heavier music scene. Moonrise and Insomniac’s Middlelands both had some heavier headliners, various non-musical activities, art and productions, but these festivals were not centered purely around dubstep, like Lost Lands. We are excited to be attending the inaugural year of Lost Lands and to check out a festival that is curated by bass heads for bass heads.

If you can’t get your Bassasaurus butt to Lost Lands, we will have post festival content for you to check out. And for those of you traveling back in time to dance with the dinos, check back after the festival to find yourself and your friends in our prehistoric people album.

Camping passes are currently sold out, but a variety of other passes, including general admission, are still available for purchase from the ticketing website. Before you dino-stomp your way to Legend Valley, make sure to check up on all of the festival information.
